After 45 minutes, we arrive at Frutillar. Take time to walk and explore its beautiful gardens. We walk along the Llanquihue Lake, which is the third largest natural lake in South America and second largest in Chile. Notice the German influence in the town’s houses and gardens. Much of the area around the lake was settled by German immigrants, before WWI. There is also a local museum you can visit on your own, showing the German influence in Southern Chile. Frutillar is famous for its Music Hall and the celebration of the Musical Week a National Festival. We recommend a sweet stop for coffee and kuchen, a type of German cake.
After that, we visit Puerto Varas, a beautiful city where we can see Osorno (8, 730-feet) and Calbuco (6, 610 feet) Volcanoes. We visit the significant sites in the town, such as the church Sagrado Corazón de Jesús and the Patrimonial route. Enjoy an easy walk down the main street bordering the lake; take photos and also enjoy the local and international cuisine and pastries, if you like. This is a good time for lunch (optional—at your own expense).
We continue our excursion to Puerto Montt, capital of the Lake District, where we visit the Manuel Montt viewpoint to see the city harbor. Then we visit the Cathedral Nuestra Señora Del Carmen (completely built of larch wood in 1856 and inspired by the Parthenon in Athens). Attached to the Cathedral is the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales, a Gothic-style structure with beautiful murals. Then we go to the Square and other parts of the town. We continue to Angelmo Market and Art Village, which is one of the most well known markets in Puerto Montt. Here you find the typical farmers and fisherman that come from the islands around Puerto Montt. Take photos and enjoy the experience with the locals!
