SEASON: Monday through Saturday; year round
ITINERARY: Enjoy a day dedicated to Chilean wine. We visit the traditional winery of Cousiño Macul, with more than 100 years tradition in the grape-growing industry. It is one of the oldest wineries in Chile, and the current owners are direct descendants of the founder, Don Matías Cousiño.
The cellar is made of ‘Cal y Canto’ or a mixture of lime, sand and egg whites, and is one of the most beautiful examples in Chile of this construction style. The cellar was built in 1872.
Here is the family’s private wine collection which includes wine bottles from 1927. In this surrounding, we enjoy a wine tasting and learn about the winemaking process, seeing the huge contrast between the old equipment used in the 19th century and the machines used with today’s advanced technology.
After lunch (optional*), we visit one of Chile’s most widely recognized wineries, Concha y Toro Winery and Vineyard. We tour the European-influenced park and grounds and the wonderful Pirque House, an architectural monument built at the end of 19th century, as we enjoy some excellent wine. Walking around the park and the lagoon, we see the vineyard that produces some of the best Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon.
One of the principal attractions is their old wine cellar, where the founder, Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, kept his best wines. Maybe we’ll learn why legend calls this the ‘Casillero Del Diablo’ (The Devil’s Cellar)!
It’s time to journey on. Our wine tasting tour ends at your hotel, airport or pier of Valparaiso.
