Known as the entrance way to the mysteries and tourist attractions of Chiloé, the Puñihuil Natural Monument is the magical ascent up to an important biodiversity zone, where penguins, whales, otters and Quetru birds coexist in harmony. It’s a place that hasn’t lost its wild beauty, nor its natural character.

Puñihuil is a natural paradise made up of three islets, very close to the mainland’s shoreline, giving life to the only place in the world where Humboldt and Magellan penguins choose to nest together.

The nesting grounds coexist without difficulties in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and fascinate the tourists who arrive via daily marine tours that travel around the islets and which provide opportunities to see and photograph these entertaining animals.

The 30-minute tours offer a wonderful panorama that can be enjoyed from September to March, led by local birdlife experts. It’s not possible to disembark at the nesting grounds, but it is possible to learn about important conservation matters regarding the species as, day by day, the population is reduced.
