Closely surrounded by the imposing Osorno and Calbuco mountains and the watery edge of Lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas will be the first city in Chile to become a carbon neutral destination.
The idea is to reduce water and energy consumption, make large investments in led lighting and changing firewood heaters for pellets. The objective is to measure and compensate for carbon footprint levels.
The initiative strives to implement the principals behind sustainable tourism in the Los Lagos Region, located in the southern zone of the country. The aim of the project is to ensure that close to 30 businesses within the sector, covering gastronomy, accommodation and complementary city services, adhere to and incorporate these sustainable tourism principals into their daily routines.
All participants will measure and compensate for their carbon footprint using the GHG Protocol, the most commonly used tool to quantify and control GHG, meaning that all the greenhouse gas emissions produced will be measured, reduced and compensated for.
Puerto Varas is one of the most famous cities in the south of Chile and it’s located in the peak and lake district, less than two hours away from Santiago by plane. Its natural landscapes are the ideal stage for enjoying kayak, fishing, climbing, trekking and skiing.
Its natural beauty and impressive geography were reason enough for the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) to choose Chile as host for its annual summit in 2015.
