The Churches of Chiloé celebrate 15 years of World Cultural Heritage

Church in Chiloé Island Chile

Church in Chiloé Island Chile

Just like its legends, mingas and curantos, the churches of Chiloé are an integral part of its landscape. They’re magical and imposing, just like the land that shelters them, and it’s been 15 years since UNESCO first recognized these ancient constructions as World Cultural Heritage Sites.

UNESCO’s distinction highlights 16 of the more than 60 wooden churches on the island, constructions that have also been named historic monuments. If you visit the Los Lagos Region, a visit to these churches is a must as they keep the cultural fusion between island’s native culture, and the Jesuits who once disembarked on the island, alive.
